As a sustainable company from Helsinki, we want to do our part to help our small, shallow sea that is sensitive to environmental changes. Eutrophication is the biggest problem in the Baltic Sea, but it is also threatened by oil and chemical transport, loss of biodiversity and climate change. Eutrophication and loss of bottom oxygen have already caused big problems for marine life.

We are supporting the John Nurminen Foundation’s important and successful work to save the Baltic Sea by donating part of the price of our tours to the foundation’s work. To our delight, many of the foundation’s projects, together with partners, have cut the phosphorus load, one of the main problems of the sea, by up to 75 percent in just under 10 years in the Gulf of Finland alone.

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

Yoo-hoo! Tours offers you guided tours with an authorized guide to the historical and interesting Suomenlinna Sea Fortress. This Unesco world Heritage Site is a popular outdoor place for locals as well as visitors. The island tells you a story of Finland’s history as part of the Swedish Crown and the Russian Empire. It also offers museums, restaurants, cafes and cool views to the open sea. Definitely a recommended place to see during your Helsinki visit!

Other Islands

There are also several other interesting island destinations surrounding Suomenlinna, with possibilities to outdoor activities, learning the history or just spending the day enjoying refreshments and the views. We can organize your trip to any of these – or even build you a unique island hopping tour, during which you can experience several different islands! This can be done by a ferry or by a private boat.

Lonna island offers a lot in a compact package. The small island with its red brick buildings is located just 10 minutes ferry ride from Market Square. On the island we guide you to the history of this former mine construction island with 45 minutes tour and show you the secret control room for the demagnetizing operations. After that – what would be better than enjoying a drink in a lovely terrace of the island!

Vallisaari and Kuninkaansaari just next to Suomenlinna were part of the Suomenlinna defense district, but still very different compared to the main island. They have been open for the public only for 5 years. The history of these islands is more connected to the Russian era and Finnish independence, but the nature is more wild than elsewhere and you really get the feeling of adventure here when finding the great constructions on our tour! The services here are more limited than on Suomenlinna but you still find several places to have refreshments and snacks as well as restrooms.

Vasikkasaari is the newest addition to Helsinki’s recreational island as it was only opened to the public last year (2020). To get there we will organize you a private boat and therefore this is also a perfect island to connect to Island Hopping tour. On Vasikkasaari (Calf Island) you will most experience the untouched island nature with some historical sights and maybe a barbeque or a picnic in the middle of the island’s arena!
